Probably a tragic love that everyone wants to forget and don't want to see again. But he always clings to the the sweet memories.

This isn't the relationship he wanted. He wants to end it before it's too late but can't. He's trapped in all confusing feelings. He tried his best to salvage this relationship. But It came to point where it's 'too' late.

My interpretation for this part is that someday he wants someone to see him and love him for who he really are and when that time comes, he'll get the happy ending of the main character.
